In a hand-to-hand sport such as boxing, participants wrap their hands and wrists to protect themselves from sprains and fractures. Handwraps can be purchased from sporting goods stores or at boxing gyms. Every athlete and trainer has their own technique for hand wrapping, but each technique serves the same purpose: to prevent injury.
Step 1
Start with your hand palm down, and spread your fingers.
Step 2
Put your thumb through the loop at the end of the wrap. If you're using athletic tape, wrap the tape around your thumb.
Step 3
Wrap your wrist three or four times.
Step 4
Stretch the wrap or tape across the back of your hand and to the outside of the knuckle of your fifth finger or pinky. Do not pull the wrap too tight.
Step 5
Go across the palm of your hand with the wrap and across all of your knuckles and the back of your hand three or four times.
Step 6
Pull the wrap diagonally across the back of your hand, to the front of your wrist, then across your thumb.
Step 7
Stretch the handwrap across the back of your hand and around your thumb again.
Step 8
Wrap it around your wrist and diagonally across the back of your hand; then across your palm and around the back of your wrist. Repeat until you reach the end of the wrap, and secure it with the Velcro.
