Overview

Losing a pet is devastating for many people. The death of the animal can mean the end of a friendship, separation from a constant companion and the prospect of being alone. Learning to cope with the death of a pet is a process for which you will want to be prepared.

Step 1

Recognize your grief and allow yourself to experience all the emotions that come with it--numbness, denial, anger and sadness. Do not give credence to those who dismiss your loss as trivial, but instead mourn for your beloved pet.

Step 2

Say goodbye to your animal to help with closure. This can take any form you desire and can be elaborate or simple. Some people hold funerals for their animals, while others spend a few quiet moments alone with their deceased pet. Whatever you choose, make sure you have made a parting gesture.

Step 3

Memorialize your pet. Some owners have their animal friends cremated and retain their ashes, and others bury the deceased and mark the spot. Others create memorials in the form of a scrapbook, painting, portrait or the keeping of a beloved toy or food dish. Make your memorial special, and make sure it honors your pet.

Step 4

Talk about your pet with those who knew and enjoyed him. Family members and friends should feel free to tell stories about the departed companion. Seeking out online buddies who have lost pets for chats can also be comforting during this difficult time.

Step 5

Write about your pet and your feelings at her passing. Putting your thoughts, love and grief on paper can help move you through the process of grieving. Write when you are alone and severely missing your animal. Keep a journal and reflect on it when you need to.

Step 6

Get out in the sunshine every day. Exercising in the warmth allows endorphins to flow and boosts your mood, thereby helping you deal with your sadness. If possible, use your outdoor time to plant a tree, shrub or small garden in memory of your lost animal friend.

Step 7

Help out at an animal shelter or pet rescue organization to facilitate coping with your loss. This can be a wonderful tribute to your departed pet as you work in honor of him. This meaningful work can also provide valuable therapy for your heart and soul as you give back to the animal community.
