Neurontin Side Effects

Neurontin, which is the brand name for gabapentin, is a medication known as an anticonvulsant. It works to treat abnormal neuron activity and can be used to treat some kinds of epilepsy. It also may be used to treat neuropathic pain. Because this medication affects the nervous system, it can cause many different side effects.

Gastrointestinal

Neurontin can affect the digestive system. Common side effects include nausea, stomach pain, vomiting and loss of appetite, Drugs.com notes. Patients may also experience either diarrhea or constipation. Dry mouth may also result from Neurontin use.

Neurological

Neurological side effects are also common with the use of gabapentin. Some of these are mild and include drowsiness, fatigue, a headache and weakness, PubMed Health notes. More problematic side effects include involuntary muscle movements, double vision and blurred vision. Patients may also experience nystagmus, which is involuntary movement of the eye muscles. Problems with balance, muscle coordination and memory may also occur.

Metabolic

Neurontin can also affect the way the body utilizes energy and other nutrients, resulting in side effects that affect the metabolic system. One such metabolic side effect, RxList explains, is peripheral edema, which is swelling of the ankles, feet and legs. Patients may also experience weight gain and have elevated blood sugar.

Psychological

Patients taking Neurontin should also be wary of emotional changes, which can include sudden changes in mood or behavior, anxiety and depression. Thoughts of suicide, increased hostility or aggressiveness and agitation are also potentially dangerous psychological side effects. Some patients also report hyperactivity, Drugs.com notes.

Cold-Like Symptoms

Gabapentin may also cause patients to experience symptoms similar to that of a cold, including a sore throat, runny nose, itchy eyes, sneezing and a chronic cough.

Ear

Otitis media, which is inflammation of the middle portion of the ear can also be caused by Neurontin use. This can result in ear pain and trouble hearing.
