Acne affects 40 to 50 million Americans, according to the American Academy of Dermatologists, making it the nation's leading skin disorder. The AAD estimates that more than $2.2 billion was spent on controlling the condition, which can be caused by bacterial growth under the skin, overproduction of skin oils, and/or clogged pores and follicles. A 2010 report published in "Chain Drug Review" reported that consumers spent $369.3 million on over-the-counter treatments in calendar year 2009, including the following five best-sellers.
Neutrogena Oil Free Acne Wash
Neutrogena has four of the top 10 selling anti-acne products available. Owned by Johnson & Johnson, the company's Oil Free Acne Wash is the top selling acne treatment at $40.5 million---a 25.8 percent increase from 2008 to 2009. Neutrogena was able to move 6.4 million units of the product to the mass market.
Clearasil Ultra
Clearasil is one of the oldest names in skin care, debuting in 1950. Its Ultra line of products is the No. 2 seller, with $22.8 million in sales and more than 2.8 units distributed. Clearasil reports that its Ultra line of benzoyl peroxide-based washes, creams and pads can reduce the appearance of acne within four hours.
Aveeno Clear Complexion
Johnson & Johnson markets its botanical skin care line under the Aveena brand. Clear Complexion is Aveeno's line of cleansing bars, washes and lotions, and is the third-best seller on the market. The Clear Complexion line accounted for $19.3 million in sales, shipping 2.5 million units of product.
Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Stress Control
Neutrogena bills its oil-free acne stress control products as a three-in-one treatment---treating the causes of acne, hydrating skin and reducing irritation. The line's creams and scrubs use cucumber and green tea extracted to sooth skin. Neutrogena moved 2.6 million units of the product in 2009, accounting for $18.3 million in sales.
University Medical AcneFree
