Benefits of Rooibos Tea

Rooibos---or "red bush"---comes from the legume plant family and is used to make herbal tea. Popular in South Africa, it's also may simply be referred to as "red tea." Sometimes enjoyed with milk and sugar but just as tasty plain, its leaves are oxidized and have a sweet, faintly nutty flavor. Adding to the appeal, rooibos tea is believed to have many health benefits.

Antioxidants

High in antioxidants, rooibos may help delay the signs of aging, reduce inflammation and arthritis symptoms, fight cancer, lower cholesterol and help reduce the risk of heart disease while helping to battle diabetes.

Relaxation

Naturally caffeine free, rooibos has a calming effect, making it a popular choice for pregnant women. It contains anti-spasmodic agents, too, so it potentially can alleviate stomach pains. It also can help relieve nervous tension and digestive issues as well as asthma.

Allergies

Rooibos tea has been used to calm the body's reaction to rashes and allergies and sometimes is seen marketed specifically as "herbal allergy tea." Given its propensity to soothe discomfort, it's often added to lotions that are used to treat acne and eczema as well.
