Digital thermometers are highly recommended for use with infants. The thermometers are more accurate and safer to use. Old glass thermometers contain mercury and can be extremely dangerous if they break. The digital thermometers can measure temperatures under the arm, rectally and using the ear. Taking a temperature orally is not recommended for babies. Use separate thermometers if using one rectally.
Step 1
Use the rectal method for temperature to get the most accurate reading. Wash the thermometer with soap and water and rinse well. Coat the tip with petroleum jelly or apply the disposable cover. Lay the baby on its back, similar to changing his diaper. Turn the thermometer on, and spread the buttocks apart. Insert the thermometer no more than 1 inch into the rectum. Wait until the thermometer beeps. Remove the thermometer and read the temperature on the digital display.
Step 2
Use the under the armpit method only if the infant is over 3 months old. Undress the baby from the waist up. Turn the thermometer on. Place the thermometer under the armpit and hold firmly in place by placing the arm over the thermometer. Make sure the thermometer stays in position until the thermometer beeps. Read the digital display panel. Be aware the under the arm method is the most inaccurate method---add two degrees to the temperature given.
Step 3
Place a disposable cover over the head of the thermometer. Sit the baby in an upright position. Turn the thermometer on. Place in ear and wait until it beeps. Remove thermometer and read digital display. Do not use this method on infants less than 3 months of age because their ear canals are not large enough.
