Home Remedy to Cure a Fever Blister

A fever blister, or cold sore, is a small fluid-containing ulcer that is usually found around the mouth. Herpes labialis is the medical term for this infectious, and often painful, condition. Most outbreaks can be effectively treated through the use of home remedy options.

Step 1

Wash the fever blister (gently) with soap and water. This will decrease your chances of spreading the virus to other body parts.

Step 2

Take an over-the-counter pain reliever, such as aspirin or ibuprofen, to reduce pain caused by the fever blister.

Step 3

Rub an over-the-counter ointment onto the affected area. Look for lidocaine or benzyl alcohol in the ingredient list. This home remedy works to decrease discomfort.

Step 4

Apply a cold pack over the fever blister to further reduce any tenderness. Place a thin cloth over the cold pack to avoid nerve damage.

Step 5

Avoid touching the fever blister in order for it to heal naturally faster.

Tips and Warnings

  • Stay relaxed as much as possible. Stress can interfere with the healing process of the fever blister.
  • Do not give aspirin to a child. It could cause Reye's syndrome, which is a rare but sometimes fatal disorder.
