When people hear the name Talladega, Alabama, many of them only think about the Talladega International Speedway and NASCAR, but Talladega has much more to offer than just auto racing. The geography around Talladega makes it a great location for camping and going on day trips that can include canoeing, fishing and other water sports, or hiking in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains.
Location and Geography
Talladega is close to the center of Alabama, about 50 miles north of Birmingham, Alabama. It lies in the Coosa River Valley, which makes it convenient to hiking, fishing and other active outdoor activities. Talladega County also has the highest mountain in the state where people cannot only camp, but also hike and ride mountain bikes.
Weather
Comfortable camping requires at least an idea of what the weather will bring. Seasonal averages for the area around Talladega range from daytime highs of the low 50s and nighttime lows in the mid 30s Fahrenheit during the winter months to daytime highs around 90 degrees and nighttime lows of about 70 degrees during the summer months.
Afternoon thunderstorms are not uncommon during the summer. Campers should plan on having a weather-proof tent with good ventilation for summer camping, and a good four-season tent for winter camping.
Campgrounds
Talladega Speedway offers free camping to ticket holders during NASCAR events in an area set aside for those who want to spend the weekend at a party. Other sections of the infield are reserved for motor homes only and have a family atmosphere.
Campgrounds outside the speedway tend to cater more toward families and outdoor recreation as you move further from the track. Additionally, there are numerous campgrounds located in the Talladega National Forest.
Things to Do
The biggest tourist attraction in Talladega is the Talladega Super Speedway and all the racing events held at the venue, but Talladega also offers hiking, canoeing and other water activities in and around the Talladega National Forest and Cheaha State Park.
Desoto Caverns Park offers easy access to a beautiful cavern system with many cave formations packed into a tour only 1/3 of a mile long. The park also offers archery, rock climbing walls, disc golf and go carts among many other attractions.
Places to Eat
Cooking hot dogs over a campfire has its place, but when you want food you don't have to cook yourself, Talladega has options from chain fast-food restaurants to bar and grill type restaurants serving steaks or Southern dishes such as fried catfish.
