A protein-based moisturizing hair conditioner is ideal for very dry or damaged hair. Protein smooths the cuticle of the hair, creating smoother strands and stronger hair. Moisturizers add softness and shine to your hair. If you prefer homemade beauty products, you can easily make a protein-laden and rich moisturizing deep conditioner at home for your hair. Make time to use your natural conditioner once a month or once a week, depending upon the condition of your hair.

Step 1

Measure 1/2 to 1 cup mayonnaise into a bowl. Add half a mashed avocado. Stir the avocado into the mayonnaise until the mixture is an even pale green color.

Step 2

Work the homemade conditioner through your hair. Focus particular attention on the ends, using less of the mixture on the roots of your hair. Comb the conditioner through your hair with a wide-tooth comb to more evenly distribute the treatment.

Step 3

Clip long hair up with a barrette or jaw clip. Wrap your hair in plastic wrap or cover with a plastic shower cap. Warm your hair with a hair dryer or a hot towel if desired.

Step 4

Leave the conditioning treatment in place for 15 to 20 minutes or as long as an hour.

Step 5

Rinse well, then shampoo and condition your hair as your normally do. Give the hair a final rinse with cool water to add shine.

Tips and Warnings

  • If you have especially dry hair, try adding 2 tbsp. of olive oil to this mixture.
  • Rinse your hair in the sink or over the bathtub to avoid slipping and falling in an oily shower.
