You must learn to stop on Rollerblades before you can safely skate around any public space. Proper stopping allows you to avoid collisions or cutting off skaters or pedestrians. You can stop on Rollerblades in several ways. Heel braking offers the fastest stop. Most Rollerblades have a heel brake at the back of one skate, typically the right skate. If you prefer to remove your heel brake from your skate, you can practice the T-stop. Whichever stopping method you choose, you should practice in your driveway or a controlled environment before using it in a public space.

Heel Brake

Step 1

Bend both of your knees. Place the foot with the heel brake slightly in front of your other foot. Keep your feet about shoulder width apart.

Step 2

Keep your back straight and hold your arms out to maintain balance.

Step 3

Lift the toe of the skate with the heel brake to bring the brake to the ground.

Step 4

Drop your butt slightly to reach a position that resembles sitting down. This motion puts pressure on the heel brake against the ground to stop your movement.

T-Stop

Step 1

Drag one foot behind the other with your toes pointing out. Your back skate should be perpendicular to your front skate.

Step 2

Bend your front knee so that you reach a lunge position. Keep your shoulders facing forward.

Step 3

Press the back foot against the pavement to stop your motion. Hold your arms out to maintain balance.

Tips and Warnings

  • Always wear protective gear when you put on your Rollerblades. Wear a helmet as well as knee pads, elbow pads and padded gloves.
  • If you use the T-stop method, you will wear out your wheels faster. Watch out for uneven pavement or small pebbles in the road. These obstacles can interfere with braking.
