If taking off your shoes has become a source of humiliation as an unpleasant odor permeates through the air, offending the noses of those around you, it may be time to concede you have a problem. Foot odor is the unfortunate result of sweat and bacteria mingling in a small, dark place within your shoes. Because it's simply impractical to keep your shoes on all day and night to hide the problem, you'll have to attack it head on. Though this may seem like a huge problem, it's a battle that's easily won.
Step 1
Fill a tub with warm water, but not so full as to overflow when you stick your feet into it. Add 3 to 4 tea bags to the water and submerge your feet. Allow your feet to soak for at least 30 minutes to help curb foot odor.
Step 2
Wash your feet daily with an antibacterial soap. Be sure to get in between your toes and scrub the bottoms of your feet. Wash your feet twice daily if foot odor is strong and persistent. Dry your feet off with an absorbent dry towel thoroughly before putting on socks or shoes.
Step 3
Go barefoot whenever possible to allow your feet to get some air. If possible, wear shoes that allow your feet maximum air circulation such as sandals. If you have to wear shoes that aren't quite as airy, rotate your shoes so you aren't wearing the exact same pair every day to help keep your shoes from smelling. If your shoes smell, your feet will too.
Step 4
Apply antiperspirant to the bottoms of your feet before you put on socks and shoes to help cut back on perspiration. Reapply it throughout the day as it begins to wear off.
Step 5
Drink enough water throughout the day to keep your body cool and hydrated to reduce perspiration, which can lead to odor. Avoid foods and spices with strong odors. Spicy foods can also increase your chances of perspiring.
Tips and Warnings
- Always wear socks when wearing shoes to absorb perspiration that can cause odor.
- If nothing seems to help, and foot odor is still very strong after attempts to eliminate it, consult with your doctor about possible medical conditions or medications that may be the cause.
