To make an oil blend for massage, it is important to research the properties of each oil you want to use. Figure out the healing purpose of the blend you want to create, such as calming, pain-relieving or energizing. Then find one or a few essential oils that claim to have those properties and add them to a carrier, or base oil. It is important to use high-quality essential oils and carrier oils when putting the oils on your body.

Carrier Oil

Step 1

Choose the carrier oil(s) that you intend to use for your massage oil blend. A carrier oil is the oil used as the base of a blend and could also be called the massage oil. Keep it simple and use only one oil, or mix oils for blends of different consistencies. Consult your physician before using oils to treat skin problems.

Step 2

For oils intended for a massage, choose carrier oils that are beneficial to the skin, such as almond, canola, olive, evening primrose, grape seed, jojoba or a combination.

Step 3

Depending on your skin type, it may be best to choose a specific oil. Almond, cocoa butter, olive and grape seed oil are beneficial to dry skin. Almond and grape seed oil, as well as sunflower oil, can be used for normal skin. Soybean oil is the most beneficial for oily skin.

Essential Oil

Step 1

Choose the essential oil(s) you want to add to the carrier oil for your massage oil blend. Consult your physician and a certified aromatherapist before using essential oils to treat any medical condition. The Essential Natural Health Bible recommends not blending more than three essential oils unless you are educated on their properties.

Step 2

Choose essential oils that are calming to use in massage oils. Essential oils for calming include chamomile, lavender, geranium, marjoram and cedarwood.

Step 3

Choose oils that are beneficial to the skin. For skin type, chamomile and geranium are beneficial for dry or normal skin, and cedarwood and bergamot are good choices for oily skin.

Blending Oils

Step 1

Create your massage oil blend. Add your carrier oil to your mixing container, then add drops of essential oils to your carrier oil. Do this slowly, being careful not to add too much. You can use a small funnel to assist in dropping the essential oils into the carrier oil.

Step 2

Make sure the essential oils only make up 2 to 3 percent of the whole oil blend, or less if very strong oils. This would be the equivalent of 6 to 9 drops of essential oils for 1 tbsp. of a carrier oil, or 4 drops per 10 ml.

Step 3

Turn the mixture upside down a few times to blend all the oils.

Step 4

Before using the blend for massage, do a patch test on the receiver's skin and yours to see if either of you has an allergic or otherwise negative reaction.
