Regular golf cart battery cleaning and maintenance is important to keep your golf cart running smoothly. Most golf cart batteries are stored under the seat and consist of six lead-acid batteries. The acid within the batteries can cause burns to your skin and clothing. It is also corrosive to the golf cart itself. Cleaning and maintaining golf cart batteries is not difficult if you take the necessary precautions.

Step 1

Remove any jewelery from your hands and slide on some safety goggles and acid-proof gloves. Inspect the battery terminal to ensure there are no cracks and that the connections are clean and not leaking or dirty. You can access the battery by holding onto the front of the golf cart seat and lifting it up.

Step 2

Make a solution out of 2 cups of distilled water and 3 tbsp. of baking soda and pour it over the tops of the batteries. You will see it bubble and fizz as it neutralizes the acid. Use your garden hose to thoroughly rinse it off the batteries afterward.

Step 3

Rinse the batteries with distilled water once you have finished cleaning them. Wipe them down with a clean, dry cloth. Use a wooden popsicle stick to coat the batteries with a light layer of petroleum jelly after the cleaning process to help prevent corrosion.

Step 4

Add water to the battery if it is low. The water level should be about 1/2 inch above the lead plates, or just below the indicator line.

Tips and Warnings

  • If batteries are damaged in any way, replace them immediately. Clean your golf cart battery outside or in a well-ventilated area. Do not smoke in the vicinity of the golf cart during battery cleaning.
