Razor bumps can occur after shaving when the hair grows in against the skin or the hair follicle rather than out, causing reddened, pimple-like pustules to appear. Razor bumps can be a source of great embarrassment and prevent women and men who shave their legs from wearing skirts or shorts in public. However, the likelihood of getting razor bumps can be diminished by taking a few preventative measures and practicing proper aftercare.

Pre-shave

Step 1

Soak your legs to soften the hairs for easier removal.

Step 2

Exfoliate your legs to remove dead skin cells which may otherwise trap shaved hairs and cause them to become ingrown.

Step 3

Apply shaving cream to your legs. Regular soap won't provide the smooth glide that a razor needs to ensure a clean shave.

Step 4

Use a razor with a new blade. Disposable blades should only be used for a week. A new, sharp blade doesn't require the application of pressure that could irritate the skin.

Aftercare

Step 1

Apply warm compresses of alcohol or white vinegar to freshly shaved skin. Both will ease inflammation and itching, and prevent infection.

Step 2

Use salicylic lotion or gel on shaved areas for a gentle exfoliation action that will prevent excess skin cell buildup which may clog hair follicles.

Step 3

Use a needle or tweezers disinfected with alcohol to gently lift out curled, ingrown hairs.

Tips and Warnings

  • Shave less often to reduce skin irritation. If razor bumps continue to occur after shaving, consider alternate hair removal techniques such as waxing and laser hair removal.
  • Do not pick at razor bumps in an attempt to free trapped hair. You run the risk of infection and possible scarring. Use warm compresses instead.

Things You'll Need

  • Shaving cream
  • Razor with new blade
  • White vinegar (optional)
  • Alcohol
  • Salicylic acid
  • Needle or tweezers
