Becoming a consistent player is the goal of any golfer who takes up the game. A golfer wants to play with confidence, knowing that he can hit the ball straight every time he has a fairway or tee shot. The key to gaining this confidence is understanding what it takes to hit the ball on target and then following a mental checklist to make sure that no mistakes are made along the way. It's best to follow a routine when you hit the ball if you want to hit it straight.
Step 1
Address the ball properly every time. Place yourself square to the target before you hit the ball. Your left shoulder--for a right-handed player--must face the target. Keep your left foot directly aligned underneath your left shoulder. Place your feet about shoulder-width apart and align yourself so the ball is about one length closer to your front foot than your back foot. Bend your knees slightly so you can easily transfer your weight from one side to the other.
Step 2
Grip the club firmly when you prepare to hit the ball. Grip the club at a "six" on a scale of one to 10, which is about the same strength as a firm handshake. This allows you to take a full swing and keep the club head from moving.
Step 3
Rotate your hips when you swing the golf club. To hit the ball straight and far, you have to get your entire body involved. Turn toward the rear, with your hips leading the way and your hands rising to shoulder height. When your hips are are turned as far to the right as possible, your hands should be at the apex of the backswing.
Step 4
Drive through the ball with your lower body and then your hands. Bring all your momentum forward as you swing the club, and once your hips have cleared the hitting zone, your hands should follow. Snap your right wrist as you make impact with the ball. This extra snap will give you distance and accuracy.
Step 5
Finish your swing with a full follow-through, keeping your head down and your eyes focused on the rear and center portion of the ball as you swing. Bring your hands up to shoulder level to finish your swing. This will keep the ball flying accurately toward the target.
Tips and Warnings
- The grip is an issue for for most beginners and high-handicap players. A grip that is too tight will lead to a swing that lacks freedom and is restrictive. If the grip is too loose, the club head will wobble on impact with the ball.
