Washing your face at night is one of the most important things you can do for your skin. This is especially true if you wear cosmetics or sunscreen during the day, according to the TeensHealth. Washing before bed removes makeup, dirt, oil and bacteria from your skin that can clog your pores and trigger skin irritation and acne breakouts. Incorporate face washing into your nightly bedtime routine for healthier, softer, more attractive skin.
Step 1
Remove waterproof makeup before washing your face at night. Some cosmetics, such as waterproof mascaras, are easier to remove with oil-based cosmetic removers. Apply to your eyes or other areas using a cotton ball and by following the manufacturer's instructions.
Step 2
Wash your face with lukewarm water and a mild facial cleanser or soap. Do not forget your jawline or neck. Using soap is essential, especially at night when your skin is likely to be oilier and dirtier than it is in the morning. The Canadian Edition of Skin Care Guide explains that water alone is only able to remove about 65 percent of oil and dirt from your skin.
Step 3
Rinse your face by filling your cupped hands with lukewarm water and splashing it against your skin. Using hot water is not necessary and can cause tissue damage, dry skin and broken capillaries on your face. Continue rinsing until your skin is free of soap.
Step 4
Dry gently with a clean, soft towel. Do not rub your face dry, as doing so can cause irritation.
Step 5
Apply moisturizer to your face within three minutes of washing if you suffer from dry skin. Acne.org recommends using a water-based lotion labeled as "non-comedogenic" to prevent clogged pores and acne breakouts. If you suffer from eczema or another skin condition, use the moisturizer recommended by your dermatologist.
Tips and Warnings
- The American Academy of Dermatology cautions against using a washcloth or sponge to wash your face. These items are more abrasive than your fingers and can irritate your skin and trigger acne breakouts.
