Playing darts is a recreational activity and a competitive sport. To throw darts accurately takes a keen eye, a steady hand and a confident delivery. In order to throw your dart on target, you must walk up to the throwing line, take your dart in hand and ignore any distractions. Focus on the target and throw the dart with an economy of movement. Throw the dart with a forward snap of your wrist and not a full arm swing.

Step 1

Take a steady stance when you prepare to throw a dart. If you are right-handed, your right foot should be directly behind the throwing line and your left foot should be about 12 to 14 inches behind your right foot. Avoid leaning too far over the line to get an advantage. You're better off with a steady base. If you lean, you might lose your balance as you throw, causing you to miss the bull's eye or the spot on the board where you're aiming. If you're playing a game such as baseball darts, you first throw at the "1" column in the first round, then the "2" column in the second, and so on until you get to the 9th frame.

Step 2

Keep the dart level before you throw. Try to throw the dart as straight as possible. Do not loft the dart and have it descend to a spot on the board. Instead, keep it straight and level throughout its flight to the dartboard.

Step 3

Use a gentle motion when you throw the dart. Think of your throw as a smooth release of the dart with your thumb and fingers. If you release the dart correctly, it should feel as though you are placing the dart on the board.

Step 4

Follow through as you release the dart. Your fingers should be straight; they should be pointing right at the spot on the board where you want your dart to go. Hold your position and keep your arm extended until the dart hits the board. Pulling up on your throw or rushing to the board after you let the dart go can cause it to go off target.
