A depressed person may have trouble sleeping, feel aches and pains that cannot be treated, find himself crying for no reason, feel restless but fatigued, have zero desire for sex, be unable to find pleasure in any activity, feel hopeless and think about or attempt suicide, notes the Family Doctor website. With all of these symptoms, depression can cause problems in a person's life that will last long after the depression has been treated.
Relationship Loss
The isolating and rejecting personality that depression can induce may leave a person with strained and lost relationships after the depression has subsided. A depressed person may push everyone who was close to her, before the depression hit, out of her life. Depression can cause a person to be no fun to be around because she can be extremely negative, unmotivated and unwilling to do anything. Therefore, her relationships will suffer. Post-depression she may find herself alone; depression may even cause divorce.
Job Loss
The Mayo Clinic notes that depression can have a negative impact on a person's job and career. As the symptoms of depression subside, a person might find himself in trouble at work and with a reduced amount of responsibilities. When a person is depressed he might call into work on a regular basis because he will be unmotivated to get out of bed. Also, depression may cause him to leave assignments and projects incomplete and be irritable and unfriendly to his boss and co-workers. These behaviors can leave work relationships broken and performance low.
Other Disorders
According to the Anxiety Disorders Association of America, close to 50 percent of people who have depression also display symptoms associated with an anxiety disorder. Even after depression has been treated and the symptoms have gone away a person may still have to overcome some type of anxiety disorder. Also, the Mayo Clinic notes that depression can cause a person to begin abusing drugs or alcohol in order to reduce her symptoms of depression. This act of self-medication may leave a person to battle a substance abuse problem even after depression is reduced.
Self-Esteem
Depression may leave a person with a lower self-esteem. When a person is depressed he may experience so much self-doubt and negative thoughts that his self-esteem is permanently impacted. Even after the depression symptoms have waned, a person may have trouble feeling confident in himself. It may take extra effort to join in social events or offer his participation at work. This will be a lasting effect of depression that he will have to keeping working through to overcome.
Body Image
After depression has ended, a person may be left with a body image that she did not have prior to the onset of depression. Depression can cause significant weight gain and weight loss depending on how it affects a person. Getting back the body she had prior to depression may take a significant amount of work and change in diet.
