Bags under the eyes can be an inherited trait, or they can be caused by a number of factors, including stress, lack of adequate rest, fluid retention, aging, inadequate nutrition or allergies, according to Health Services at Columbia University. You can relieve bags under the eyes with a few simple techniques and lifestyle changes. See a physician if the bags under your eyes are severe, or if they are accompanied by redness and itching.

Step 1

Place a cool, damp tea bag or sliced cucumbers on your closed eyes for 10 minutes when your eyes feel tired, advises Jill Haynes, an aesthetician at UC Davis Medical Center. Alternatively, apply cotton balls that have been dipped in cool milk.

Step 2

Wear sunglasses anytime you are outdoors or driving your car. Sunglasses will protect your eyes from the rays of the sun, and will protect the surrounding area as well.

Step 3

Elevate your head slightly when you sleep at night to prevent fluids from gathering in your lower eyelids, recommends Haynes. Get plenty of sleep--at least seven to eight hours nightly.

Step 4

Drink at least eight glasses of water every day and avoid excessive salt, which can cause fluid retention. Cut back on alcohol and caffeinated drinks such as cola, coffee and tea, which can cause puffy eyes, advises "Marie Claire" magazine.

Step 5

Eat a healthy diet with adequate levels of vitamins and minerals, especially Vitamin K, says Haynes. Vitamin K is found mostly in green vegetables such as broccoli, spinach and turnip greens.

Things You'll Need
