As your child grows, her desire for new adventures will grow along with her. For a parent, that first bike ride can be simultaneously memorable and terrifying. Training wheels will help both parent and child adjust to the new bicycle: They offer stability when a child is first learning to balance on two wheels, and protect her in case that balance fails. Installing training wheels on your child's first bike can take just minutes, and provide hours of safe fun.
Step 1
Secure the bike on a stand or against something similarly stable.
Step 2
Remove the nut that holds the back tire in place. Look at the center of the tire, where the frame connects to the tire. This is the axle. There is a nut on each side of the tire. Remove the nut on one side with a wrench. Leave the washer in place.
Step 3
Slide the open slot of the training wheel bracket over the post that holds the bike wheel in place. Removing the nut will have exposed the post or axle.
Step 4
Replace the axle nut on the bike. Do not tighten it. The training wheel should be a half-inch off the ground. Slide the training wheel bracket up or down on the axle until the training wheel sits at the correct level.
Step 5
Tighten the axle nut to complete the installation on this side. Repeat the steps on the other side to install the second training wheel.
