Carpal Tunnel Treatments at Home

The carpal tunnel is a narrow space under the wrist and palm that protects the nerves that splay out to the fingers and hands. When pressure is put on the area for lengths of time, the fingers can become tingly and begin to lose feeling. The numbness and pain can lead to carpal tunnel syndrome. According to the Mayo Clinic, most symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome can be relived by treatments at home.

Rest

Those who work with equipment that requires constant pressure on the carpal tunnel, such as computer workers and machinery operators, should take frequent breaks throughout the day to allow blood to circulate to the hands.

Swelling

When the hands become swelled from long periods of pressure, ice packs can help relieve the inflammation.

Splint

A splint that holds the wrist still during sleep can help relieve the tingling that often continues throughout the night.

Medication

Over-the-counter non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as Advil and Aleve can help prevent swelling, especially for those with other inflammatory conditions such as arthritis.

Prevention

When symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome first appear, the patient should make adjustments to the work area, such as lowering a keyboard or purchasing a wrist rest for the mouse. Patients also can try using the other hand or alternating among tools for specific jobs.
