Proactiv manufactures of a variety of acne treatment solutions and other skin care products. The three main products most commonly referred to as Proactiv Solution consist of a cleanser, a toner and a repairing lotion. Some side affects may occur when you use these products. You should consult your doctor before you begin using Proactiv Solution, and especially if you have any serious or adverse reactions.
Dryness
According to Proactiv, your skin may become dry when you begin using Proactiv Solution, particularly if you already have dry or sensitive skin. The main ingredient in both the cleanser and repairing lotion is benzoyl peroxide, which is an acne medication that can cause dryness. The company recommends that you use an oil-free moisturizer to combat the products' drying effects. If your skin continues to be dry even with the use of a moisturizer, Proactiv suggests you use the solution once a day instead of twice until the problem lessens.
Redness or Peeling
Proactiv Solution may also cause your skin to redden or peel for the same reasons it can cause dryness. This reaction should be mild, according to Proactiv, and it should lessen over time. If you experience redness or peeling, you can try using the product less often. But if this reaction continues to bother you, you should discontinue using Proactiv.
Sensitivity to Sunlight
The benzoyl peroxide in Proactiv Solution can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight, and this may cause you to become sunburned more easily. The company recommends that you apply a sunscreen with an SPF level of 15 or higher before going outdoors.
Allergic Reactions
If you have an allergy to benzoyl peroxide, you may experience itching and develop a rash or irritation when using Proactiv. You should stop using the product altogether if this kind of reaction occurs. If the rash does not go away after you have discontinued using the product, you should consult your doctor. Proactiv recommends that you test your skin for an allergy to benzoyl peroxide before you begin using these products as well.
Proactiv states that their refining mask contains topical sulfur. If you have an allergy to oral sulfur, you may also have an allergic reaction to this product. However, Proactiv claims that this kind of reaction is rare. But they also recommend that you place a small amount of the product on your skin to test for any adverse reactions before you begin using it, and you should contact your physician if any allergic reaction develops.
