A worn grip on a golf club can keep you from making a proper swing. You need a firmer hold on the club, and this reduces your power. The Golf Pride website explains that the tack on a grip wears down due to use, exposure to sunlight, dirt, oil and heat. Once that sticky feeling is gone, you might be able to restore it with a good cleaning. Debris on the surface of the club will mask the rough area of the grip. Proper and regular cleaning will enhance the life of a golf club grip and keep the surface tacky.
Step 1
Apply a small drop of dish soap to a wet cloth. Rub the soap and cloth over the grip.
Step 2
Use a soft, abrasive pad or brush on the grips to help remove embedded dirt and oil. Rinse the grip under running water to remove soap residue.
Step 3
Rub medium-grit sandpaper lengthwise over the grip. Place the paper on the bottom of the grip and move it to the top of the club. Do not press hard. The goal is to make the surface rougher, not sand off the grip.
Step 4
Rewash the grip with dish soap and run it under water a second time.
Step 5
Wipe the grip down with a clean, dry cloth. Set the club aside for 24 hours to let the grip dry.
Tips and Warnings
- If sanding and cleaning does not restore the tacky feel to the grip, it is time to re-grip the golf club. According to the website Frugal Golfer, clubs need re-gripping annually.
