Over time, the lubricant that allows the treadmill's belt to run smoothly can wear off, according to HorizonFitness.com. When the lubricant wears off, the treadmill will not function properly and can be damaged. SmoothFitness.com suggests that treadmills that are used daily have their belts lubricated every three months. This process is simple to perform and requires only a few minutes and some basic supplies. Prior to lubricating your treadmill's belt for the first time, it is advisable to read the owner's manual to ensure that there are no special considerations for your treadmill. For example, many ProForm treadmills self-lubricate and should not be manually lubricated.
Step 1
Purchase the type of treadmill belt lubricant that your owner's manual recommends. According to Preceptor.com, thin spray lubricants and powder lubricants are most common. Treadmill belt lubricant can be purchased online and at fitness supply stores.
Step 2
Turn off and unplug the treadmill to avoid injury while you are working with it.
Step 3
Wipe the deck of the treadmill with a soft cloth. According to Woodway.com, it is essential that only a soft cloth be used to avoid scratching the surface of the treadmill.
Step 4
Lift the walking belt away from the deck of the treadmill and wipe the area between the deck and the belt to remove any debris that may have accumulated.
Step 5
Apply treadmill belt lubricant to the area between the belt and the deck of the treadmill. Instructions for use of treadmill belt lubricants vary, so be certain to read and follow the directions of the specific type of lubricant that is used for your treadmill.
Step 6
Spread the lubricant on the deck of the treadmill and the underside of the belt to evenly distribute the lubricant.
Step 7
Plug in and turn on the treadmill. Set the treadmill to a speed of 2.5 miles per hour and let it run for five minutes. Do not stand or walk on the treadmill during this time. Walk on the treadmill at a comfortable walking pace of 2 to 3 miles per hour for an additional five minutes to adequately distribute the lubricant.
