While getting older is a fact of life, certain vitamins can be taken to prolong the aging process. Taking antioxidant vitamins regularly fights disease, promotes heart health and deters the physical signs of getting older, such as wrinkles and skin elasticity.
Selenium
According to the National Institute of Health, selenium, like other antioxidants, protects against damage caused by free radicals including certain forms of cancer, such as lung and prostate. Additionally, selenium helps maintain skin elasticity. While selenium is often available in vitamin-form, certain foods are considered a good source of the vitamin including eggs, seafood and whole grains, such as rice.
Vitamin E
Vitamin E boosts the immune system and helps to prevent or delay chronic diseases, such as influenza, according to Life Extension. Additionally, vitamin E in lotion form has the ability to reduce fine lines and wrinkles.
Vitamin C
Perhaps the most well-known vitamin--vitamin C--promotes tissue repair according to the US National Library of Medicine's MedicinePlus. Vitamin C is also known to avert aging because it inhibits the formation of wrinkles on the skin, guards against cancer and lessens the risk of Alzheimer's disease.
Melatonin
Melatonin, an antioxidant responsible for causing drowsiness, is naturally produced in the brain. According to University of Maryland Medical Center, melatonin levels in the body drop with age. Taking melatonin supports a healthy immune system because it helps people sleep better, allowing the body to recuperate with adequate rest.
