Every person is born with about 2 to 4 million sweat glands, which become fully active during puberty, according to The New York Times Health Guide. Although everyone sweats, you may be embarrassed if your perspiration is accompanied by a foul-smelling body odor. Most sweating is normal, caused by heat, exercise or an emotional reaction such as when you're nervous or angry. Although the conditions that trigger perspiration cannot always be controlled, you can manage any accompanying body odor by making lifestyle changes.
Step 1
Wash your body with an antiperspirant soap at least once a day. Dry your body thoroughly with a towel after bathing, including the spaces between your toes, to prevent the growth of excessive bacteria.
Step 2
Apply a perfume-free antiperspirant deodorant to your underarms after your bath or shower. Spread antiperspirant on your feet and hands each night before bed.
Step 3
Buy clothing and shoes made of natural, breathable materials, such as leather, linen, cotton, wool and silk.
Step 4
Wear underarm shield pads, which attach to the armpit area of your shirt or dress and absorb your sweat, preventing the wetness and odor from reaching your clothing.
Step 5
Pack an extra shirt and pair of socks to change into during the day, especially after exercising.
Step 6
Keep your feet dry and odor-free by rotating your shoes, allowing your shoes to dry for 24 hours before wearing them again. Apply a medicated foot powder to your feet and wear sandals or go barefoot inside when you can.
Step 7
Avoid foods and beverages that cause odorous sweat, such as alcohol, caffeine, spicy foods, garlic, onions and similar foods.
