Training wheels offer a way for kids to move from the stability of a tricycle to the more challenging two-wheeler. Many parents look forward to the day when their child asks to have the training wheels removed from the bike. Removing training wheels takes only an adjustable wrench and a few minutes to accomplish. Once the training wheels are off, be ready to assist your child to gain the confidence and skill needed to take that first ride.

Step 1

Place the kick stand, if available, in the down position, or prop the bike against a support. Locate the axle bolts that fasten the rear wheel to the bicycle frame.

Step 2

Loosen and remove the right side nut from the axle bolt with the adjustable wrench.

Step 3

Remove the locking bracket for the training wheel from the axle. Remove the training wheel itself from the axle.

Step 4

Replace the axle nut and tighten it with the wrench.

Step 5

Repeat steps 2 through 4 for the training wheel on the left side of the bicycle. Your child's bicycle is now officially a two-wheeler.
