How to Remove a Golf Club Head

According to Golf Galaxy, reshafting your clubs can be an inexpensive way to try the latest in shaft advancements and find the shaft that bests suit your golf game. Reshafting your golf clubs is necessary when the club head becomes loose or the shaft is damaged. Knowing how to properly remove a golf club head saves you from damaging the head and the shaft. Remove the heads from your golf clubs in a well ventilated area.

Step 1

Wrap the shaft in masking tape just above the ferrule to protect the shaft from accidental cuts. Cut the ferrule off the shaft with a utility knife.

Step 2

Wrap the club shaft in a soft cloth and place it in a vise. Slip the open end of the hosel protector onto the shaft between the club head and the vise head. Tighten the vise snugly, allowing 1/4-inch between the top of the hosel protector and the vise head.

Step 3

Put heat-resistant gloves on and apply heat with a heat gun or blow dryer to the hosel of the club head. Heat the hosel for three minutes if the shaft is graphite. If removing an iron head from a steel shaft, use a propane torch rather than a heat gun and heat the hosel for 15 to 30 seconds.

Step 4

Place the shaft pry bar against the hosel protector and around the shaft. Using the vise as leverage, gently pry the club head off the shaft.
