Whether you enjoy hockey, figure skating or rollerblading, you'll find the proper lacing and tying of your skates helps provide the right amount of comfort and support to your feet and ankles. Lace skates correctly for maximum comfort and safety on the ice. You can teach this straightforward method to children just learning to skate.

Step 1

Loosen the laces down the tongue of the shoe so that your foot can slip in easily. Place your foot in the skate shoe.

Step 2

Cinch the laces that cross the tongue of your shoe, starting with the laces nearest your toes and working your way up. Pull so the lace is snug on the foot but not so tight that it restricts blood flow.

Step 3

Tie an overhand knot by placing the left lace over the right side of the lace, bringing it all the way under the laces. The left lace should now be hanging off the right side of the skate, and vice versa.

Step 4

Bend the lace end on the right side of the lace and form a loop. Take the lace hanging off the left side of the skate and wrap the lace around the loop. This creates a loop out of both laces. Take the lace wrapping the looped lace and push the middle of the excess lace through the loop. This will create a second loop end.

Step 5

Pull on both looped ends of your skate lace and pull tight to tighten the knot.
