Over time, the grips on your golf clubs will deteriorate. And if you golf frequently, you will detect the worn grips sooner than the casual player will. Replacing old grips will improve your game. New grips give you a better handle on the club, which should result in a better swing---and lower scores on the links.

Step 1

Place the golf club in a work bench vise and tighten, making sure the old grip is exposed.

Step 2

Cut away the old grip from the top of the club to the end with a sharp knife. Remove all the old tape on the club with your fingers or knife.

Step 3

Clean the shaft of your club, rubbing away any remaining fragments of old tape with a rag dipped in solvent. Allow the club to dry.

Step 4

Wrap the shaft length of the club with double-sided tape and remove the backing once the tape is on.

Step 5

Pour solvent on the double-sided tape and on the inside of the new grip. Pinch the open end of the new grip and shake it, spreading the solvent over the entire inner surface.

Step 6

Place the new grip over the double-sided tape and allow it to dry for a few hours before using.

Tips and Warnings

  • After placing the new golf grip on the club, take it out of the vise and place the head on the floor so you can make minor adjustments if the grip feels uncomfortable, notes to Golf Equipment Source.
  • Be certain you have the right length for a new grip. According to Tee to the Green, it is easy to not put the new grip all the way on, to stretch it out too far or to have the wrong length. To be sure, measure a new grip against one you have put on a club to ensure they are of consistent length.
