A properly used neck pillow can make the difference between a good night's rest and waking up sore, stiff and tired. Neck muscles can become strained and nerves can be pinched if you sleep on a pillow that offers inadequate support of the neck area. Shoulder and arm pain can also often be attributed to poor neck positioning as tendons and ligaments are stretched. The right pillow can alleviate these symptoms, correctly supporting and aligning the head and neck to promote good posture, improved breathing, increased circulation and relief of headaches and sore muscles.
Step 1
Consult with a physician to determine if your neck pain can be eased or overcome with the use of a neck pillow.
Step 2
Purchase an appropriately firm pillow for your condition. A firm pillow will provide the most support and treat chronic, serious neck pain. A pillow with softer support will ease pain caused by injuries and temporary bad posture.
Step 3
Place the curve or rise of the pillow against the back of the neck to echo the natural curvature of the spine there. If you sleep on your side, place the curvature beneath the side of your neck so your head is cradled.
Tips and Warnings
- If you have inflammation in addition to neck pain, use a pillow that has a pocket for inserting an ice pack. In a pinch, roll up a towel as a substitute for a neck pillow.
- Pay attention if your neck pain worsens. You may need to try a pillow with a different thickness or shape.
