Acne seems to pop up at the most inopportune times and when you're least prepared to deal with it. If you have a pimple and you are without an over-the-counter topical acne treatment, a home remedy you can try is toothpaste. Toothpaste has long been a secret weapon against unsightly pimples. Its drying properties shrink pimples and make them less noticeable. The best part is that you always have toothpaste on hand.

Step 1

Wash your hands and face with a gentle soap. Dry thoroughly. Moisture is your enemy in this situation. You want to dry out that pimple.

Step 2

Use a classic formula toothpaste. Avoid tartar controlling and whitening formulas, because they contain harsh chemicals. Also avoid gel and mint formulas, because the menthol they contain will irritate your skin.

Step 3

Use your fingertip to cover the pimple completely with toothpaste.

Step 4

Apply an adhesive bandage over the pimple. This is to prevent the toothpaste from drying out too fast and cracking and falling off your skin. You want the toothpaste to remain in contact with the pimple for as long as possible to promote maximum drying.

Step 5

After 2 to 3 hours, remove the bandage and gently wash your face with a nonirritating soap. Refrain from touching or picking at what remains of the pimple.

Tips and Warnings

  • Using a natural-formula toothpaste will reduce the chance of your skin becoming irritated or inflamed by any of the ingredients. If the pimple persists, apply toothpaste and a bandage to it at night before going to sleep. The longer contact time may further dry out the pimple. This works best if you have oily skin.
  • Some people are allergic to fluoride, an ingredient common in most toothpastes. If your skin begins to tingle after applying the toothpaste, wash it off immediately.

Things You'll Need
