Makeup Tips for Women of Color

With literally hundreds of choices for foundation, blush, eyeshadow, mascara and lipstick, the potential for made up looks are literally endless. In recent years, the recognition that women of color are also prominent consumers of cosmetics has been addressed by many cosmetic companies, opening up numerous possibilities for accentuating your features.

Enhance Your Skin Tone

Whether you prefer liquid, powder or both, there is a foundation out there for you. Visit a cosmetics counter and have a beauty consultant help you choose a shade that works best for your skin tone. Remember that you want to enhance your skin tone, not cover it or change it. Look for products that provide adequate coverage but still have a natural finish.

Don't Be Afraid of Color

Women of color tend to see products in vibrant shades and shy away from them because they feel they are too strong in hue---this is not true. Makeup is literally paint for your face. It can be altered the same way you can alter paint for your home. If you find an eyeshadow that you feel is too vibrant for you, use it as an eye liner instead to add a hint of color instead of a splash over the entire eyelid.

Bronzer is Your Friend

Bronzer is a multifaceted product that works well for women of color. Consider dusting a light layer of bronzer over your face for a sun-kissed look. Use bronzer instead of blush during the summer to highlight your cheekbones. Mix some bronzer into your foundation to add a glow. No matter how you use it, the key is to use it lightly. You don't need to concentrate it in any certain area.

Keep it Simple

As a quick, everyday look, keep it simple by lining your eyes, brushing on a light layer of blush, foundation and mascara and putting on some lipstick. Women of color tend to have more pronounced features. It is not always necessary to put on a heavy coat of makeup to accentuate your face.
