Dandruff or dry, flaking skin on the scalp is an embarrassing cosmetic problem. It can be caused by environmental factors that dry out the skin like heat, cold or dry air. Other causes include insufficient washing, irritation caused by shampoo or styling products and eczema. Whatever the cause, dandruff is usually not serious and can be managed at home. Seek help from your dermatologist if the dandruff persists for more than two to three weeks.
Step 1
Take a hot shower. Massage 2 to 3 tbsp. of olive oil into your scalp, and wrap your head in a towel. Allow the oil to soak in for 10 minutes, then wash out. Repeat weekly.
Step 2
Mix 3 tbsp. of white vinegar with 6 tbsp. of warm water. Massage into the hair and scalp, then rinse. The vinegar solution will strip away build-up from shampoo and hair products.
Step 3
Spend sometime outside soaking up the sun. According to the MayoClinic.com, moderate sun exposure may help reduce dandruff.
Step 4
After shampooing your hair, rinse with the juice of one lemon mixed with 1 cup of hot water. Repeat two to three times a week as needed.
