A number of factors can hamper hair growth. Malnutrition can reduce your hair's growth rate, and so can a traumatic physical event, such as a surgical operation. Genetic factors can cause your hair to stop growing as well. Androgenetic alopecia, for example, is a common condition in men, as well as some women, that causes hair follicles on the top of the head to stop producing hair upon exposure to a specific form of testosterone called DHT. Whatever the factors responsible for your hair loss, you can take steps to restart your hair growth.
Step 1
Begin taking a daily zinc sulphate supplement. Take one 200mg supplement in the morning, one in the afternoon and one in the evening for a total of 600mg daily. Zinc sulphate has been shown to reverse hair loss in post-surgical patients who have not regrown hair with standard vitamin supplementation. Allow six months for the zinc sulphate to have an effect.
Step 2
Apply topical monoxidil, which is commonly marketed as Rogaine, to your scalp twice daily or as specifically recommended by the label of the product you purchase. This medication can be purchased over the counter. It is most effective in regrowing hair in people under 40 years of age. Hair loss will usually resume quickly upon cessation of monoxidil treatments.
Step 3
Obtain a prescription for finasteride from your doctor and take it as prescribed. Finasteride is commonly marketed as Propecia but also comes in generic forms. The drug blocks the formation of DHT and halts the progress of androgenetic alopecia.
