Hair loss occurs for a number of reasons--genetics, aging, illness, stress, poor diet and medication reaction. If you are losing your hair due to genetics or old age, there is little you can do to prevent your hair from falling out. If your hair loss is due to other factors like stress, poor diet, or a medication reaction, those causes are easily treatable and there are things you can do on a daily basis to limit your hair loss.

Step 1

Treat the hair gently, and avoid over-washing, heat styling and chemical processing. Daily washing, blow-drying, curling, flat-ironing, dyeing or perming the hair, can all weaken the hair shaft and cause more hair loss than necessary. Try skipping a day or two between washes and only heat style when necessary. Avoid chemical processing all together.

Step 2

Unclog blocked hair follicles that might be inhibiting new hair growth by massaging the scalp with tea tree oil one to three times a week. Tea tree oil is an antiseptic and can help clear trapped sebum from the hair follicles to allow for new growth. Place a few drops of tea tree oil on the scalp and massage into the scalp with the fingertips for five to ten minutes.

Step 3

Use a natural bristle brush instead of synthetic to brush your hair. Synthetic brushes can snag, pull, and break hair overtime. Natural bristle brushes are gentler on the hair and scalp, which means less hair loss.

Step 4

Avoid using hair clips, or wearing the hair in a ponytail, which can cause pulling, breakage, and weakening of hair.

Step 5

Practice relaxation techniques to reduce stress, which can cause undue hair loss. Find a time each day to meditate, practice yoga, or listen to calming music. Take a walk in nature. If your stress is excessive, find a counselor or therapist to help you work through your problems.
