How to Relieve Restless Leg Syndrome

Restless leg syndrome, also known as RLS, is a condition that affects both men and women. The symptoms that take place are a burning or twitching sensation in your extremities, coupled with an uncontrollable urge to get up and move around, after you have been lying down or seated for a while. Although it is called restless "leg" syndrome, the effects can be seen in the hands as well. The condition is not life-threatening, and can be relieved when it shows up.

Step 1

Relax your muscles. When you are feeling twitchy, do something that can relax your legs and arms, such as soaking in a warm bathtub or getting a massage.

Step 2

Take over-the-counter drugs. When the twitching and sensations in your legs are mild, take a pain reliever such as Motrin or Advil.

Step 3

Exercise. If you exercise at a moderate pace in the afternoon, you can help prevent the symptoms from taking place at night. Keep it moderate, as high-intensity exercise can make it worse. Do something that involves your legs, such as running, walking, swimming, biking or stair stepping.

Step 4

Do mind/body activity. If you are highly stressed, RLS can become worse. Calm your nerves with relaxation techniques right before bed, such as yoga or meditative breathing.

Step 5

Get a prescription. Various prescription medications developed for other conditions can be used to relieve restless leg syndrome. Some of these include opioids, muscle relaxers, epilepsy medications and Parkinson's disease medications.

Step 6

Cut back on caffeine. Caffeine is a stimulant that can cause jitters, nervousness and restlessness. Leave this out of your diet plan, especially later in the day.
