Arthritis is a condition that attacks the joints in the body. Over time, the joints can become deteriorated, and they can develop chronic pain, swelling, inflammation and redness. According to the Centers for Disease Control, "arthritis is the most common cause of disability in the United States." With these statistics, it's no wonder people are looking for ways to relieve arthritis.
Step 1
Take over-the-counter medications. When the joints become sore and riddled with pain from arthritis, pain relievers can be used for fast comfort. Some examples are Motrin, Advil and Aleve.
Step 2
Take care of your joints. If you suffer from arthritis, and you have a job that requires constant bending or kneeling, protect yourself. All this stress on your joints can make them swell and can lead to more pain. Wear protective padding, and keep bending to a minimum.
Step 3
Keep your diet healthy. Avoid excess weight if you have arthritis, since it puts excess stress on your joints and exacerbates the symptoms. Keep your weight under control by avoiding high-fat, high-calorie foods and eating healthy, nutrient-dense foods instead. Some examples are fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fish, nuts, seeds and lean meats.
Step 4
Take joint-healthy supplements. There are various supplements you can use to relieve arthritis symptoms, including SAM-e, devil's claw, glucosamine and chondroitin.
Step 5
Exercise. One of the worst things you can do with arthritis is to become immobile. The less movement your joints get, the more stiff they become. To relieve arthritic symptoms, get 30 minutes of exercise at least 3 days a week. To help preserve your joints, choose non-impact exercises such as walking, elliptical training, rowing and swimming.
