How to Build Up Your Immune System

Your immune system is your body's regulatory system. It is responsible for protecting your body's other systems and keeping them safe from sickness and illness. Building up your immune system is an important step in being healthy. There are easy steps you can take to adjust your lifestyle and better support your immune system.

Step 1

Get plenty of rest. Getting adequate sleep at night allows your body to rest and prepares your immune system for fighting off any diseases or germs it comes into contact with during the day.

Step 2

Eat well. Your body depends on the food you eat for fuel. Eating fruits and vegetables is the most effective way to provide that fuel. Foods that are high in fat or sugar will actually slow your body down and reduce the efficiency of your immune system.

Step 3

Drink plenty of water. Water is a natural cleanser allowing the body to rid itself of toxins. It is recommended that you drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water, or 64 ounces (approximately 2 liters), per day.

Step 4

Take in adequate amounts of vitamins and minerals. Many vitamins and minerals are absorbed through the foods you eat, however taking a multivitamin or specific vitamin supplements will help to boost the performance of your immune system.

Step 5

Manage stress. Stress can quickly damage your immune system. Following the aforementioned recommendations as well as finding ways to process stress will help to keep your immune system functioning properly.
