According to the Hair Loss Learning Center, 35 million men and 21 million women in the United States experience hair loss. Because of the large number of people affected, many hair loss supplements are available. One of the key ingredients in many of these supplements is biotin, a mineral that is believed to be involved in hair health and may prevent future hair loss. While these supplements may be effective, you should talk to your doctor to ensure they are safe first.

GNC Biotin 5000

GNC's Biotin 5000 contains 5,000 mcg of biotin, which is 1,667 percent of the daily recommended value for the nutrient. As the supplement information website BodybuildingForYou.com explains, Biotin--also known as vitamin B7--deficiency may cause hair loss. According to the site, supplementation of biotin is supposed to help your body to release growth nutrients from fatty acids. This process supports healthier nails and possibly, the growth of new hair.

Natrol Biotin 1000 mcg

Natrol's Biotin 1000 mcg contains just 1/5 of the biotin content of GNC's supplement. Both manufacturers instruct you to take their supplement once daily, so based on the biotin content, GNC's product may be more effective. However, the lower dose in Natrol's supplement may mean you are less susceptible to any potential side effects that an overdose might cause. Natrol also points out that biotin is needed for your body's energy production in addition to promoting healthy hair and nail growth. Natrol Biotin 1000 mcg also contains 46 mg, or five percent, of the daily recommended level of calcium, a mineral linked to bone health. Natrol also claims this product is vegetarian, meaning it contains no animal products.

MRM Biotin 5mg

MRM is a manufacturer of a wide variety of sports supplements, but does include biotin in their line-up. This biotin product contains 5mg, or 5,000 mcg, of biotin per pill, the same amount as the GNC Biotin 5000 supplement. In addition to pointing out the potential hair and nail benefits of biotin, MRM notes that biotin helps metabolize carbohydrates, fats and proteins. MRM explains that one role biotin plays is in the creation of cells, as it works with the fat required for cell membranes. MRM claims this makes biotin especially important for healthy skin in addition to hair.
