Health Benefits of Omega Three Fatty Acids

Omega-3 fatty acids are touted for an array of health benefits ranging from increased cognitive function to disease prevention and even weight loss. These fatty acids can be found in food sources such as fish, oils, nuts and certain plants. Many people, however, choose to supplement with fish oil capsules. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, fish oil capsules should not be used in children, unless directed by a medical doctor. Due to the potential for drug interactions and side effects, such dietary supplements should be taken only under the supervision of a health care provider.

Arthiritis

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, clinical studies indicate that the use of omega-3 fatty acid supplements may aid those suffering with arthritis. Those taking the supplements may experience reduced tenderness in joints and decreased morning stiffness. The result may mean fewer medications needed for those with arthritis, specifically rheumatoid arthritis.

Depression

Individuals suffering from depression and other mental disorders, such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, may experience a reduction in symptoms and fewer episodes of depression, hostility and mania, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. More research is needed, however.

Heart Disease

Preventing and treating heart disease is best done with a low-fat diet and consumption of healthy fats such as monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats like omega-3 fatty acids (according to the University of Maryland Medical Center). Additionally, the DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) occurring in fish oil may reduce the risk factors for heart disease, high cholesterol and hypertension (high blood pressure).

Skin

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, omega-3 fatty acids have been used to encourage wound healing. Research done on animals reveals that omega-3 fatty acids help promote healthy levels of proteins in the body. This is significant to recovery from burns. Other skin conditions that may be improved with the consumption of omega-3 fatty acids (in supplement form) include photo dermatitis and psoriasis. Photo dermatitis sufferers experience sensitivity to the sun. According to the same source, one clinical study showed reduced sensitivity to UV rays after taking fish oil supplements. Another study done on psoriasis sufferers revealed those who added omega-3 supplements to their treatment plan fared better than those who only used medications. See References for more information on these studies.

Osteoporosis

Supplementing with omega-3 fatty acids may help those with bone loss, specifically osteoporosis. Clinical studies reveal that omega-3 fatty acids can increase calcium levels, deposit calcium in the bones and improve bone strength, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center.
