Oily hair is the result of sebum overproduction within the scalp. Sebum is the skin's natural oil, which acts as a moisturizer and lubricant for your skin and hair. Overproduction of sebum may be due to a hormonal imbalance that may occur, for example, during puberty and pregnancy or as a result of illness or medication. The key to dealing with oily hair is to ensure that it is clean and properly treated.

Step 1

Shampoo your hair daily with warm water and a gentle cleanser specifically formulated for oily hair suggests website KidsHealth.org. Once or twice weekly, switch out by using a clarifying shampoo for a deeper clean, suggests CareFair.com. Clarifying shampoos remove styling-product build up that is not removed by other shampoos; however, it is too strong for daily use.

Step 2

Apply a light conditioner to the ends of your hair. Your hair ends suffer the most damage through day-to-day styling and environmental exposure. According to CareFair.com, conditioning the ends only will help keep split ends at bay without adding oiliness to your hair. Conditioner and shampoo combinations should not be used as they weigh the hair down.

Step 3

Rinse your hair with half a cup of vinegar mixed with one cup of water, suggests CareFair.com. You can also mix a few drops of essential oil into the mixture to improve aroma. Rinse your hair twice weekly with this mixture to help dry up excess oil and remove residue.

Step 4

Style your hair as desired with oil-free styling products. According to KidsHealth.org, styling gels and foams can add greasiness to your already oily locks, leaving them lifeless and unmanageable. Products labeled "greaseless" and "oil free" are ideal for styling purposes.

Things You'll Need
