Hair can be damaged by exposure to sun, heat, chlorine, chemicals in hair dyes and permanents, and even harsh shampoos. Damaged hair looks dry and rough, and breaks easily. Poor nutrition also causes dry, rough hair that splits easily. Some of the damage can be prevented by wearing a hat when you are out in the sun, limiting the use of your blow dryer and curling iron, and taking vitamins and minerals. However, once your hair is damaged, it needs extra care to return to its natural smooth, glossy and moisturized state.
Step 1
Combine 1 egg yolk, 1 cup tepid water, 1 tsp. sesame oil and 1 tsp. lemon juice in a small bowl and whisk until it is thoroughly mixed. Put the mixture in a flip-top applicator bottle and work the mixture through your hair from the roots out to the ends. Put on your shower cap, or wrap your hair in plastic wrap, and cover with a towel.
Step 2
Wait 15 minutes before rinsing your hair thoroughly with tepid water. Don't use hot water, which could make the egg mixture lumpy.
Step 3
Rinse out the applicator bottle. Combine the sesame, almond, coconut or olive oil in a small bowl with the sprig of rosemary or lemon verbena. Warm gently in the microwave using 10-second bursts of heat. Don't overheat the oil. Put the warm oil in the applicator bottle and apply to the roots of your hair until your entire scalp is covered. Use your fingers to work the oil out to the ends of your hair. Then work the aloe vera juice into the roots of your hair and use your fingers to comb the aloe vera out to the ends of your hair. Put the shower cap back on, and wrap with a towel again.
Step 4
Leave this oil treatment on your hair for two hours or overnight. Use a very mild shampoo to wash out the oil, rinse thoroughly, then pour the chamomile tea through your hair as a final rinse.
Tips and Warnings
- As an alternative, use the egg yolk shampoo and the oil treatment as two separate treatments instead of doing them on the same day. Use these treatments every week for more lustrous hair. A good haircut that can be styled without a blow dryer or curling iron will also help to improve the appearance of your hair.
- If you have any allergies, or are concerned about any of the ingredients in this treatment, do a patch test before proceeding with the treatment. Apply the ingredients that concern you to your inner arm. Wait 24 hours to see if any irritation occurs. If there is no irritation, it is likely that the treatment will not cause any problems for you.
