According to the American Academy of Dermatology, facial expressions and exercises that continually crease your face increase your risk of developing wrinkles and lines. At the same time, underlying muscles in the face fill in and hold up the skin when replacing fat. The trick to doing facial exercises to tone your face is to perform those movements that do not make excessive creases. Staying hydrated helps to ward of dryness that adds to the wrinkles and avoiding the sun is the most effective way to keep your facial skin healthy.

Winking

Facial muscles under the eyes are strengthened as you blink. Holding a wink for a longer period of time helps build up those muscles without adding any additional creases. According to Shape Your Face, the more you isolate your eye muscles without engaging any other facial muscles, the better your results. The skin around the eyes is sensitive and needs additional muscle strength to reduce the appearance of the fine lines that form with age. First splash water on your face or apply lotion prior to beginning. Holding your head erect, close one eye by lightly lowering the lid and hold for a couple seconds. Release and repeat 50 times on each eye.

Neck Stretch

The front of the neck is one of the first places that begin to show the signs of aging. You need to strengthen those neck muscles to help hold up the fat and tendons in the neck to avoid the sagging turkey-like appearance. Build a stronger neck by tilting your head back so that you are looking at the ceiling. Refrain from creasing your face or making any other facial expressions while you do this exercise. You can perform this exercise while sitting or standing. When your head is tilted, press your tongue against the roof of your mouth and lower your head. Keep pressing your tongue and feel the muscles tighten. Release, relax and repeat 10 times.

Open Mouth

According to Jack Lallane on Age Well.com, you've got to stretch your facial muscles by opening your mouth wide in order to keep the muscles toned and taut. He created what he calls "facenstics" to keep his face in as good a shape as the rest of his body. Lallane, who's never had a facelift and has been a fitness guru since the early 1950s, reports that you can give your face a proper workout by opening your mouth as wide as you can and rotate your chin. You'll feel many of the 53 muscles in your face stretch out and tighten. Maintain the movement for about a minute. Rest and then repeat 10 times. Follow up the rotations by tightening up on your neck muscles with your mouth open sideways and hold the wide grin for count of 10. Release and repeat 10 more times.
