A proper golf grip is the first step in improving your golf game. The way you hold the golf club has a direct influence on how the ball will fly off the tee once you strike it. If you are experiencing problems with your golf game, start at the beginning and work on improving your golf grip. With the proper grip, you will see major improvements in the distance and accuracy of your shots.

Step 1

Hold the golf club in front of you with your right hand so that the grip portion of the golf club is facing you.

Step 2

Grab the top of the golf club grip with your left hand so that the upper portion of the club rests just under your pinkie finger, according to Golf.com. Lie the club across your fingers so that the lower portion of the club rests in the middle of your index finger. Imagine you are shaking hands with the golf club. Your thumb should rest on the club and point down toward the head. Keep your fingers close together to ensure a stronger grip.

Step 3

Wrap your right hand around your left thumb and the golf club grip. Your left thumb is covered by your right thumb and the palm of your right hand, while the rest of your fingers wrap around the club. Keep your fingers close together.

Step 4

Slide your right pinky finger between your left index and middle finger to better grip the golf club and increase control, according to Ashby's Guide to Golf.

Tips and Warnings

  • Reverse the hand you use in Steps 1-4 if you are a left-handed shot.
