How to Straighten Thick Hair

Thick hair can be difficult to straighten, but modern beauty tools and devices make the process easier. Thermal heating products protect hair from frizzing and damage caused by the intense heat of styling tools. Hair straighteners come in different models and sizes and a variety of price ranges. Thick hair can be straightened; however, the process will take longer than it would for thin hair--anywhere from 1 to 2 hours.

Step 1

Wash hair and condition. Recondition if necessary to get hair as soft as possible. Towel dry and then use a blow dryer to completely dry hair. Air drying is an option, but hair must not be wet before moving on to the next step.

Step 2

Put hair up, using pins or clips, into sections of approximately 1 inch.

Step 3

Leave the bottom portion of the hair loose and spray it lightly with a thermal protectant spray. Using a hot flat iron, clamp hair and glide the flat iron down the length of hair. Starting from the bottom works well for some people.

Step 4

Release sections of hair while moving to the crown of the head. Keep sections small. Spray hair with finishing spray to hold style.

Tips and Warnings
