Thymol is a phenol that scientists have found in thyme and horsemint plants, however, the majority of manufacturers obtain the essential oil from thyme. The ancient Egyptions used thymol for mummification and preservation purposes. Today, this oil is well known for its antimicrobial properties and ability to kill off certain bacteria and fungi, although there is not enough evidence to support these claims. Thymol is used as an antimicrobial agent, a mouthwash and a pesticide as well as a treatment for various respiratory infections. Consult with your health care provider prior to using thymol essential oil.
Antimicrobial
Thymol may provide protection against certain bacteria and fungi. According to Drugs.com, thymol may be effective against certain gram-positive bacteria such as Pseudomonas, E. coli, Salmonella and Shigella. However, thymol may not be as effective against other gram-negative bacteria. Furthermore, thymol oil may provide protection against certain fungi such as Candida and Aspergillus. A study published in the 2004 issue of Phytotherapy Research found that thymol oil showed antifungal effects against Candida albicans.
Respiratory Infections
Thymol oil may be useful in treating certain respiratory infections like bronchitis. According to the website Henriette's Herbal, thymol oil has been used as an oral inhalant to help loosen bronchial secretions, improve expectoration of excessive mucus and stimulate the mucous membranes of the lungs. Furthermore, the antibacterial properties of thymol oil may contribute to its effectiveness against bronchitis and other upper respiratory infections. Simply pour some hot water into a large bowl and add two to three drops of thymol oil to the water. Sit with a towel over your head and bend over the bowl to inhale the steam for up to five minutes. Repeat as necessary.
Mouthwash
Thymol is one of the active ingredients in the mouthwash Listerine. The antiseptic properties of thymol, in conjunction with eucalyptus and menthol, can help kill harmful bacteria in your mouth, thereby protecting against dental cavities and germs that cause bad breath. According to Henriette's Herbal, Listerine has also been used in other medical specialties, including gynecology, surgery, uro-genital disorders, and wound care and cleansing.
Natural Pesticide
Thymol oil may be an effective and natural alternative to chemical pesticides, according to "Massage and Bodywork" magazine. Thymol is a volatile oil that can produce a gas when added to soil that can kill weeds, fungi and other harmful microorganisms. Researchers at the University of Florida found that the antibacterial properties of thymol helped kill certain bacteria that can cause root rot and wilting in certain plants, including bananas, tomatoes and potatoes. Thymol oil may also help protect your plants against harmful fungi in your soil.
