People with oily skin sometimes face a quandary. Keeping your face clean and free of the excess oils that cause acne and maintaining an appropriate level of moisture in your skin can sometimes seem like they are mutually exclusive. In reality, cleansing an oily face with products that help your pores stay clear of clogs and infection is easy. As each person is different, prepare to try a variety of products until you find a combination that works for you.
Step 1
Wash your face two or three times a day as needed, but resist the temptation to wash more frequently. The American Academy of Dermatology explains that overcleansing an oily face can actually strip your skin of too much oil and prompt your oil glands to produce more of its natural moisturizers. Suggested cleaning times include upon waking, after exercising and at bedtime.
Step 2
Use noncomedogenic cleansers on your skin, especially if you suffer from periodic breakouts from acne. Noncomedogenic means that the ingredients in the facial wash, soap or makeup will not clog pores. An excess of oil on your face can clog pores, trapping bacteria and other materials under the surface of your skin, which can lead to acne.
Step 3
Avoid scrubbing your face roughly. Gently washing your face with your fingertips or a soft cloth can sufficiently remove dirt and surface oils. Rough handling may lead to irritation, especially if you are in the midst of an acne breakout.
Step 4
Apply a topical acne medication, if needed, or a light moisturizer after cleansing. Though the statement sounds like an oxymoron, oily skin can still become dried out at times and needs some added moisture. Select acne products that contain salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide and oil-free moisturizers for best results, according to the American Academy of Dermatology.
