Homemade recipes for hair and skin solutions are easy to make and often are just as effective as commercial products for less cost and with no unknown chemical ingredients. Fresh foods from your kitchen and essential oils are all you need to create an array of health and beauty remedies. As always, talk with your doctor if you are dealing with any serious skin condition.
Eggs, Olive Oil and Rosemary Essential Oil for Hair Health
According to Julie Gabriel, author of "The Green Beauty Guide," a mixture of eggs, olive oil and rosemary essential oil can help maintain optimal hair health. Combine 1 whole egg, 1 tbsp. olive oil and ¼ tsp. rosemary essential oil in a small bowl, and stir or whisk to combine. Gently massage the mixture onto your wet hair and scalp in the shower, and leave the mixture on for 15 minutes. Rinse your hair with cool, clean water, and wash with a mild shampoo. This treatment can be repeated daily as long as it does not irritate your scalp or skin. Keep unused portions in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours.
Arnica Essential Oil, Lime Juice and Avocado Oil for Hair Growth
Ann Worwood, author of "The Complete Book of Essential Oils and Aromatherapy," recommends a mixture of arnica essential oil, lime juice and avocado oil can help to regrow hair and make hair grow faster. Combine 1 tbsp. arnica essential oil, 1 tbsp. lime juice and 8 tbsp. avocado oil in a small jar or bottle, and shake vigorously to combine. Pour a small amount of the mixture onto clean hands, and massage it into the hair and scalp. Leave the mixture on the area for 10 to 15 minutes before rinsing with cool water and washing with a gentle shampoo and conditioner. You can repeat this treatment daily as long as it does not cause any irritation or extreme redness. Store unused portions in the refrigerator for up to one week.
Aloe Vera, Papaya Extract and Shea Butter for Skin Irritations
A mixture of aloe vera, papaya extract and shea butter can be used as a topical treatment for skin irritations, notes Melanie A. Sachs, author of "Ayurvedic Beauty Care." Combine 2 tbsp. aloe vera gel, 1 tbsp. papaya extract and 2 tbsp. shea butter in a bowl, and whisk to combine. Gently massage a thick layer of the mixture onto the affected area, and leave it on for 30 minutes before rinsing with cool water and washing with a gentle soap. Repeat this treatment in the morning and evening as long as it does not exacerbate your skin condition. Keep unused portions in a cool, dark place for up to 30 days.
