How to Wax Your Skimboard

Skimboards allow you to glide across the water's edge at the beach. If you find it difficult to stay on your feet on your skimboard, applying a coat of wax makes it easier for your feet to grip the board. The wax should form a sticky, bumpy surface.

Step 1

Clean the top of your skimboard thoroughly. Scrape any old coats of wax off with a plastic scraper. If you need to melt hardened wax, warm it up with a hair dryer, then wipe it off with a soft towel.

Step 2

Apply a base coat of wax to the top of the board. Rub the wax bar around the board's surface in a circular pattern, then rub more wax onto the board in a straight line from nose to tail. Finally, rub in more in a straight line from side to side.

Step 3

Apply a top layer of wax over the base coat. Rub the wax bar around the board's surface in a circular pattern. The wax should form small bumps.

Tips and Warnings

  • Use hard, high-temperature wax for the base coat and wax specific to your area's water temperature for the top coat. Look for surfboard wax at surf, skateboard or snowboard shops or at online retailers.
  • Keep surfboard wax out of reach of children and pets. Don't leave your wax out in the sun, where it will melt.
